A framework for measuring presence, citations, accuracy, and traffic from AI answers without turning generative visibility into another empty business metric.
Build a universe of questions before the dashboard
The starting point is a versioned list of questions a real audience might ask. It should include definitions, comparisons, problems, implementation, risks and brand searches. Every query is tagged by market, journey stage, product and potential value. Without this universe, a tool can report many mentions for questions that change no decisions. The sample does not claim to represent every possible behavior; it serves as a stable panel for observing changes and detecting gaps.
Visibility in AI answers cannot fit into a single average ranking. It must be observed as a system: coverage of relevant questions, citation frequency and quality, entity accuracy, competitive presence, referral traffic and subsequent actions. The goal is not to appear everywhere, but to be accurately represented when a relevant decision is at stake.
Separate presence, citation, and recommendation
An answer may mention Wiwo without linking to it, cite a URL without recommending the brand, or recommend it with an incorrect description. These are different states. Record name presence, cited URL, position within the answer, mention context, and the role assigned to the company. Also note whether the chosen source is owned, press, a partner, or a third party. This tells the team whether it needs to improve its entity, content, or external reputation.
Accuracy is a KPI, rather than a footnote
Every review should compare the answer against a canonical record: name, category, products, markets, leadership, partnerships, and confirmed capabilities. Errors are classified by severity and possible origin. An old description may come from a legacy page, an outdated announcement, or an internal inconsistency. Correcting the source is more sustainable than trying to influence an isolated answer. The accuracy rate shows whether the brand's public footprint is becoming more coherent.
Connect citations to subsequent outcomes
Referrals from ChatGPT or other surfaces must be analyzed with the same discipline as any source: entry landing page, useful engagement, paths taken, forms, meetings or qualified inquiries. Traffic can be small yet relevant when it arrives with an advanced question. Impact may also occur without a click; forms or conversations should therefore ask how people discovered the brand, without automatically attributing every mention to a sale.
Report changes that enable action
A monthly report can show questions gained and lost, the most cited URLs, new errors, recurring competitors, content that needs updating, and opportunities without an answer of your own. Every finding should end with an action, an owner, and a date. Variability across queries, accounts, and moments means absolute conclusions should be avoided. The value lies in trends measured with a stable protocol and concrete improvements to sources the organization controls.
A comparable AI Visibility record
Keep the same questions, market and language. Save the answer and cited links for each observation; an isolated mention does not establish a trend.
| Indicator | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | Answers naming the brand / valid answers observed |
| Citation rate | Answers linking to the website / valid answers observed |
| Accuracy | Claims verified as correct / claims reviewed |
| Commercial impact | Attributable visits and contacts; measured separately from presence |
Fictional example: 4 mentions in 10 observations = 40%; 2 citations = 20%. These are not Wiwo results. Answers vary by engine, version, context and date; repeat observations and report sample size.
