A figure disappeared from the report: separating missing data, zero and error with MetriQ

When a figure is missing, do not replace it with zero or immediately infer declining activity. Identify the expected source, period and datum, then check its status with the owner. Wiwo.MetriQ helps review information from configured areas; interpretation should distinguish an observed value from an absence or a query needing correction.

An empty cell does not tell the same story as an observed zero.

Describe the absence precisely

The initial alert is often broad: information is missing from the report. Specify brand, indicator, period and view. Establish whether the figure existed in a previous review or is a new expectation. Otherwise, people may investigate different problems while believing they discuss the same omission.

Request an example of the expected result and retain the query context. Understanding one cell does not require the whole customer dataset. A precise reference helps check the authorised source, date selection and indicator definition without unnecessary circulation of files.

Do not turn absence into performance

Zero can be a valid result for observed activity. A blank cell may mean unavailable information, a filter or pending review. An error may prevent knowing the result. These distinct states deserve visible treatment. Combining them can change a conclusion even when marketing activity remains unchanged.

Do not fill a missing value with last month’s number just to complete a chart. That creates unverified continuity. Nor should a reassuring nothing happened explanation be used. Explain what is readable, what is pending and which decision should wait until the absence is understood.

Check whether presentation changed

Sources may group or present information differently depending on the report. Google Analytics documents cases where less frequent values are grouped into an other row. A name absent from the table does not therefore necessarily have zero activity. This illustrates why the source needs checking.

Do not generalise that case to every source or assume MetriQ applies the same rule. The owner must examine the actual dataset. Ask whether data ceased to exist, became inaccessible or stopped appearing in that view. Each answer requires a different response.

Missing data calls for a different question.

Distinguish what was observed from what cannot yet be interpreted.

There is a valid observation and the recorded value is zero.

Review the available Wiwo.MetriQ scope

MetriQ includes period comparisons, brand and project dashboards and reports from enabled sources. Historical coverage and detail depend on sources and agreed configuration. Before requiring a complete series, confirm what can be recovered and what relies on team-supplied materials.

Keep the question and confirmed explanation together. If scope excludes a particular datum, say so clearly. This supports deciding whether existing material suffices or another source, a narrower question or an agreed scope change is necessary.

Protect comparisons while the issue is resolved

If the absence affects an important conclusion, do not present a difference as definitive improvement or decline. Share validated parts while identifying what remains pending. Incomplete charts need not halt discussion, but their limits must travel with them when copied or presented.

Explain which decision depends on the figure and which can proceed. A publication’s clarity may be reviewable while a distribution number is pending; a comparison using that number requires more support. Separating decisions prevents both haste and an unjustified blanket wait.

Close the issue with a reusable explanation

Once the cause is confirmed, leave a note explaining the report change and the series’ meaning. Internal operating details need not be exposed. A later reader should know whether the value is corrected, the period incomplete or the source limited.

The learning is not a promise that information will never be missing. It is the ability to recognise an omission, explain it and protect dependent decisions. Reporting with MetriQ gains value through that reviewability rather than an appearance of certainty unsupported by evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Should zero replace a value a source did not supply?

Not without checking meaning. An observed zero and an unavailable value are different states. Use a readable explanation and confirm interpretation with the owner.

Does missing data prove a MetriQ problem?

Not necessarily. It may concern the source, selection, coverage or configuration. Describe the case and investigate origin before assigning cause or reaching performance conclusions.
